AI: from science fiction to reality

Research in terms of Artificial Intelligence is gaining impressive ground.

In terms of new technology, there are more and more smart companies. A.I. is targeting all areas: Medicine, security, connected objects, engineering etc. And the mobility market is no exception, revolutionizing transport and the driver’s environment. Car sharing, carpooling, assistance, parking… everything helps make our human life easier! This goal is shared and encouraged by the French government. The latter is currently working on, among other things, the creation of several interdisciplinary institutes of Artificial Intelligence. A report on the subject was published by Mr Cédric Villani last March. This report identifies four sectors in which France must develop its efforts in the field of A.I. – in health, the environment, defence and… transportation. Now all areas of activity are investing in this future market.

A.I and the city

The urbanization of the cities has transformed the space around us. Smart cities help improve the daily life of its users: pedestrians, motorists or users of environmentally-friendly transport. Vehicles have undergone major transformations. Now, car manufacturers are really concentrating their research and development on the self-driving car. What with virtual reality, hybrid, electric and self-driving vehicles … will we soon see the era of “Transformers” cars?! A few months ago, Ford announced that it wants to invest 1 billion million in the development of artificial intelligence for its self-driving vehicles. The ambition of this manufacturer is to produce a 100% self-driving car. There’ll soon be no need for humans to drive, the car will take care of itself!


A.I. and users

Even the way we commute on a daily basis has seen distinct changes. New ways of transport are impacting the user’s ecosystem. The transport service has diversified according to the current demand for sharing, ecology, economy or simply the wishes of the user. A new model of personal mobility is being organized. The increasing use of applications to calculate routes, for example, proves that the absence of human contact, no longer has a significant impact. Each user has different ways of doing things and A.I. can adapt to these variations. Time-starved users will prefer easy and quick access to information they require, and others need to define their itinerary before they leave. A.I. can provide solutions for all these different needs. But what if A.I. could also take on a social function, for example by providing solutions for the needs of people with reduced mobility, or people who live alone, far from family and friends…?


A.I. is adding an undeniable dimension to innovation in the mobility sector. We are witnessing the emergence of connected cities, in harmony with new urban requirements. But this evolution requires a collection of important data from the population. Today, this information is hosted on a virtual space but perhaps it will encourage our human intelligence to think about the security and protection of this data?
